Mac users running macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later can change their background during Cliniko telehealth calls. This can be helpful to maintain privacy, reduce distractions, and create a more professional atmosphere—perfect for remote consultations or when calling from non-clinical spaces.
Changing your background is a native Apple feature that is only available to Apple silicon Mac users running macOS 15 (released in September 2024), also known as macOS Sequoia. You can click on the logo at the top left of the menu bar and select About This Mac to check the version you're currently on:
How to customise your background on a telehealth call
On compatible devices, you'll notice a green video camera icon appear on the menu bar at the top whenever you're on a video call:
Clicking on it will show you a list of available video effects that you can apply to your video.
Replace your background
Click on Background while you're on a telehealth call. Your background will change immediately:
Click on the background preview icon on the right to select a backdrop that suits your needs from several options:
Gradients: Pick from a palette of nine soft gradient styles that subtly mask your surroundings.
Apple Park Views: Select the Mountain icon to explore scenic backgrounds from Apple's headquarters.
Custom Background: Use the Gallery icon to upload a personal image as your background, giving your calls a unique touch.
Blurring your background
Click the green video camera icon in the menu bar, then select Portrait:
Your background is now blurred, putting the visual focus on you!
💡 Tip: To adjust the amount of background blur, click the ">" next to Portrait and use the slider:
The blurred background feature is available to users of macOS 12 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon.
