Mac users running macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later can change their background during Cliniko telehealth calls. This can be helpful to maintain privacy, reduce distractions, and create a more professional atmosphere—perfect for remote consultations or when calling from non-clinical spaces.

Changing your background is a native Apple feature that is only available to Apple silicon Mac users running macOS 15 (released in September 2024), also known as macOS Sequoia. You can click on the  logo at the top left of the menu bar and select About This Mac to check the version you're currently on:

How to customise your background on a telehealth call

On compatible devices, you'll notice a green video camera icon appear on the menu bar at the top whenever you're on a video call:

Clicking on it will show you a list of available video effects that you can apply to your video.

Replace your background

Click on Background while you're on a telehealth call. Your background will change immediately:

Click on the background preview icon on the right to select a backdrop that suits your needs from several options:

  • Gradients: Pick from a palette of nine soft gradient styles that subtly mask your surroundings.

  • Apple Park Views: Select the Mountain icon to explore scenic backgrounds from Apple's headquarters.

  • Custom Background: Use the Gallery icon to upload a personal image as your background, giving your calls a unique touch.

Blurring your background

Click the green video camera icon in the menu bar, then select Portrait:

Your background is now blurred, putting the visual focus on you!

💡 Tip: To adjust the amount of background blur, click the ">" next to Portrait and use the slider:

The blurred background feature is available to users of macOS 12 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon.
