If Android devices and Google Chrome browser are what you normally use for Cliniko, then any passkeys you set up will be saved, by default, to Google Password Manager. This is Android and Chrome's built-in security system and passkeys saved here will work across your entire "Google Account"—as long as it's synced across each of your devices.

Passkeys won't work properly across each of your Android devices or your Chrome browser unless you're using the same Google Account on each one. This means that you must be logged into the same Google account on your phone, tablet, and computer. Google has some information on this here.

We'll cover the following in this guide:

What does "the same Google Account on each one" mean?

When you use Android or Chrome, you will have a primary Google "profile" that is linked up with all your information—such as your email address, bookmarks, and stored passwords. When logging in on various devices, as long as you're logged in on the same Google Account and it's synced across each device, it makes it easier to sign into various apps and websites that have information saved in Google Password Manager (which is linked to your Google Account).

If you're using an Apple computer or a PC and opt for Chrome as your primary browser, you will have the option to sign into the same Google Account you use on your Android phone. This means that regardless of the device, as long as you're signed into your Google Account on each of them and using Chrome as your browser, your settings are "remembered".

When it comes to passkeys, you must be signed into Chrome with the same Google Account across all of your devices. Google has some information on:

When a passkey is stored in Google Password Manager and your Google Account is properly synced across all your devices, they will work properly for each site you've set them up for.

How does this factor into passkeys for my Cliniko account?

If Chrome is your preferred browser, regardless of computer type (Apple or PC), and your phone is an Android, then you will most likely be setting up a Cliniko passkey to be saved in Google Password Manager. As long as you're using the same Google Account on whatever device you're logged into, once you set up the passkey, it will allow you to access Cliniko regardless of device, because it's stored securely in Google Password Manager.

If you're using different Google Accounts, however, a single passkey will not work. If you have one Google Account that's specifically for your work computer and your email address is my-name@work.com, and another Google Account that's specifically for your personal computer and your email address is my-name@home.com, these are considered two completely separate Google Accounts. Even though they're both "you", Google Password Manager doesn't know this. So if you set up a passkey under your work Google Account, that passkey won't work on your personal Google Account. You'd need to set up two different passkeys, or be logged into the Google Account you've created a passkey on, to log into Cliniko.

What is required for passkeys to work on my Android devices and in Google Chrome?

For the easiest use of passkeys across all of your devices, the most important things to know are:

If you're using an Apple computer, you will need to make sure that you have the latest version of macOS. If you're on a Windows PC, you will need to have the latest version of the Windows operating system. Passkeys will not work properly unless your devices are updated to the most recent operating systems.

All of the above are necessary for passkeys to work properly across your devices. Without being logged into the same Google Account, having that synced across all devices, and ensuring that your device is updated to the latest operating system, passkeys will not work.

If you're not sure whether you're signed into the same Google Account on various devices, Google has some instructions on how to check for this here. You will be able to see a list of each device that's linked to your Google Account, and this means that passkeys should work on each device.

How can I set up a passkey for Cliniko that will work on each of my Android/Chrome browser devices?

First things first, you will need to make sure that all of the steps in the above section have been covered—everything is synced and updated.

Then, when logged into Cliniko, go into the My info section and press the Create a passkey button:

Enter your Cliniko password to verify your identity:

You'll then see a pop-up asking you to save the passkey to Google Password Manager. Below is an example of what this looks like if you're using Chrome on an Apple computer, but you might see something different depending on what device you're using. The important thing to note is that the passkey will be saved to Google Password Manager:

After continuing, you will be able to give your passkey a label. It will default to "Google Password Manager", but you can change it if you want. Just be sure to give it a name that will be easy to remember:

A case for giving this a different name might be if you're using different Google Accounts/Chrome profiles to log into Cliniko—for example, one at work, and another one at home. As notes above, Android and Chrome will not save the same passkey to two different Google Accountss, and this means Cliniko won't allow you to log in with your Android/Google passkey unless you're on the device and logged into the Google Account that the passkey was saved to.

If you're using different Google Accounts across different devices and will need to access Cliniko on each of them, we recommend giving the passkey a unique name to help you remember which device it's associated with, such as Work computer—Google Account and Personal computer—Google Account. This will help to differentiate which Google Account and passkey you're using when logging into Cliniko.
